  • Survival and Functional Outcomes After Hip Fracture Among Nursing Home Residents.  Newman MD, Silber JH, MagazinerJS.  JAMA Intern Med 2014, June 23 online.  Large cohort study (60,111 residents) confirms poor outcomes following hip fracture, with mortality rate of 36% and combined death and total dependence rate of almost 54% within six months of fracture.

Whilst some evidence is inconclusive, the use of hip protectors is recommended as best practice.  The issue of compliance, however, was identified to affect the use of appliances in residential aged care.  Addressing compliance issues must be tackled if hip protectors are to be part of a resident-centered approach."
